The four aerodynamic forces at play on a model are lift, drag, thrust and gravity.
1. Lift ?The result of airflow over the curved upper and lower wing surfaces. It is the force that keeps the model in the air.
2. Gravity - This is the force exerted on the model that pulls it down.
3. Thrust - Thrust pushes or pulls the model forward.
4. Drag - the opposite of thrust, drag is created by the friction of model against the air as it moves forward.

Flight Control Suggestion
Flight RC airplane just like the real airplanes, models depend on control surfaces to maneuver and fly, the basics being the elevators, ailerons and rudder. Some of the more sophisticated ones might have spoilers and flaps and leading-edge wing flaps.
Elevators - control nose up or nose down attitude of the airplane. This, in a nutshell, is how it works. When the pilot pitches the nose up (pulling back on the stick), the wing angle is changed as related to the RC airplanes forward movement. As the angle of the wing is increased,more of the lower wing surface is revealed to the oncoming air and an increase in engine power will cause the airplane to climb. Increasing AOA too much without a corresponding power increase will result in a stall situation.
Rudder inputs are used to counter the effect known as adverse yaw when turning the model. This is the tendency of the right extended (down) aileron to produce drag on a left hand turn causing the model to want to turn to the right.
Ailerons ?These are located on the trailing edge of the wings near the wingtips. These surfaces will roll the model to the left or to the right. If the aileron stick is moved to the right, the model will roll to the right because less lift is produced on the right wing. This can be explained as follows. When a right roll input is intoduced, the right aileron will move up into the airstream and the left aileron will move down. Therefore the airflow rushing over the right wing no longer flows smoothly, creating less lift on that wing causing the model to roll to the right. It works the same way for the left wing.

If and when you're ready to step up to a gas RC airplane there are certainly lots to choose from. Some people prefer the full-throttle sound of the gas motors and increased size too but of course along with those comes an increased price!
For me, one of the coolest things about radio control is imagining that I'm the pilot of the real thing because of the truly realistic scale models we can buy like the Megatech P-51 Mustang below. While certainly not a rookie's RC plane, it's still durable enough to give you many years of flying fun!
Plus, when we crash while learning to land on a simulator, there are no broken
parts to replace so they can actually be a very wise small investment!

Carbon fiber rods, tubes and strips
How-to Info for Carbon Fiber Rods, Tubes and Strips
If you're looking for information on carbon fiber rods and tubes, then you've come to the right place!
Carbon fibre, which can refer to carbon filament thread or to felt or woven cloth made from carbon filaments, is a polymer which is a form of graphite and graphite is a form of pure carbon.
In graphite molecules, the carbon atoms are arranged into large sheets of hexagonal aromatic rings which resemble chicken wire. The carbon fiber graphite sheets are long and thin, almost like ribbons and they like to pack together.
The filaments themselves are stranded into a thread and carbon fibre thread is rated by the number of filaments per thread, in thousands. Therefore, 3,000 filament carbon fiber is 3 times as strong as 1,000 carbon fiber, but is also 3 times as heavy. This thread can then be used to weave the above mentioned carbon fibre cloth.
The appearance of this cloth generally depends on the size of thread and the weave chosen. Carbon fibre is naturally a glossy black, but recently colored carbon fiber rods have become available.
The ribbons mentioned above are then combined with epoxy resins to form reinforced composites which are very light and very strong for their weight. In fact, carbon fibre composites are often used to replace metals in airplanes, tennis rackets and golf clubs!
Carbon fiber rods and tubes are made by pulling or wrapping carbon fibers and epoxy resin to a specific diameter which in turn forms a densely reinforced carbon composite.
How to Work with Carbon Fiber
Here's a handy tip: did you know that CA or "Krazy Glue" debonder (acetone) dissolves CA glues but does no damage to carbon fiber rods? This means that you can re-use old rods and tubes by soaking the part in acetone for a couple of hours and then wiping it off!
Cutting rods: use an abrasive cutoff wheel chucked in a Dremel tool or else a very fine 32 teeth-per-inch hacksaw. Do not use a band saw. However, to cut small rods up to 3mm in diameter you can also use a bicycle braided-cable cutter available from many bike stores. The V-shaped jaws prevent the ends from splintering. If you work with a lot of carbon fiber they're well worth buying.

Whats all the buzz about
electric radio control airplanes?
Arent they huge, heavy, and hard to fly? No, those days are long gone when the size of your battery took up at least half the plane. Just as modern advances in battery cells have taken the automotive industry into practical, affordable gas-electric hybrid vehicles, so have those same advances done wonders for the electric radio control airplanes world.
Today's
lithium batteries
have gotten lighter and more powerful, resistances have lowered resulting in less overheating, and these things together have led a big growth trend in the number of radio control enthusiasts switching to or even getting started in electric radio control airplanes.
Perhaps one obvious benefit is that you dont have to lug around nitro fuel wherever you go. Along with that, you arent always searching for that elusive fine line between rich and lean that keeps some gas-powered plane owners awake at night. Granted, if maintenance is your thing and flying is a fun and necessary by-product, then youll probably want to stick with your gas-powered models. For some plane owners there is nothing like good old-fashioned elbow grease.
If, however, you live to fly and wish your plane would magically maintain its engine while stored away waiting for the next outing, perhaps electric is your way to go. The electric radio control airplanes systems include battery cells, a motor, a control, and wiring. And likely you wont be called on to repair any of it on a regular basis.
The batteries are mostly
NiCd/NiMh cells
with the number of cells determining the level of output of the battery pack. When a battery cell goes, it goes. Buy a new one and carry on. The same with a motor. Maybe all this replacing of parts sounds like a waste to you, but realistically these parts can last forever if taken care of. Run a motor within its limits and it will keep on running. But if you fry it, its pretty much gone.
Some other advantages of electric radio control airplanes come from the fact that these planes are very quiet in comparison to their gas powered cousins. Their low volume output motors allow them to be flown in more areas with less resistance from the community. Their lack of engine noise also makes them seem less intimidating and therefore less dangerous by many who are sharing a park or open space with them.
And perhaps the most practical advantage of electric radio control airplanes is that they can be taken out for a quick flight, packed back up, and theres no worrying about fueling up then draining the fuel for storage.

How to work with Depron foam for model airplanes

"Foamies" are model foam planes made from Depron foam, in this case radio control planes. It's proving to be a very popular item with my model airpane customers because of it's superior strength and appearance compared with BlueCore or fan-fold foam. Developed in Europe, its primary use is for thermal insulation under wallpaper and as a flooring underlayment. Depron isnt very common in North America except for use as meat trays, quite useful themselves if you can find some large unused ones to make snow skis, struts, etc.It's actually polystyrene (EPS/XPS) plastic and the (EPS) means expanded while (XPS) means extruded. For our purposes, were only interested in the stronger, denser XPS foam which also happens to be a closed-cell foam. Open or Closed cell refers to its structure and because open cell foam soaks up all fluids (water & glue) its just not suitable for a foamie plane. The superior closed cell foam takes much less glue and is easier to waterproof. It's one sealed surface adds considerable strength as well as making it very easy to apply paint finishes. To summarize, here are its advantages:You don't have to worry about grain direction and splitting like with balsa woodEach sheet is is consistently identical to every other pieceCan easily be curved into airfoil shapesColors come out nice and bright compared to painting over pink, blue or gray foam that needs to be primed firstDoesn't absorb moisture and you don't have to spend time sealing it to prevent warping in summerThe 3, 5 & 6mm thicknesses are primarily used for building large scale models, indoor flyers, 3D foam flyers, gliders, etc. Its great for structural supports and one piece foam plane fuselages because of its strength. The thinner Depron makes excellent skins for covering models instead of using expensive balsa wood. For extra strengthening requirements (wings, fuselage, struts, pushrods, etc), use carbon fiber rods, tubes and strips It's quite easy to work with and no special cutting tools are required. A common #11 Exacto blade or single edged razor blade is all you need. It cuts very nicely with these tools but to ensure straight cuts be sure to use a long metal ruler.Depron foam cannot be heated without losing shape and in fact will shrink in width and length too. It also becomes brittle and thickens with heat because of the numerous tiny gas filled cells in it. So in order to overcome those handicaps while shaping it with heat, heres what we need to do:pre-heat a wooden mould of the desired shape in an oven for 20-30 min at 80-90 deg.C (176-194deg.F)form the piece around the heated wooden core or mould by first carefully cold-crushing it without cracking it.wrap clear packing tape tight around the whole outside. This forces the foam to follow the shape of the mould, and prevents increasing in thickness. place it in an electric oven for 15 minutes at 80-90 deg.C (176-194deg.F) remove from oven and let cool for at least 1 hour. This will fix the shape of the mould into the depron, and retain its strength too.To assemble your models, I recommend you use 5 min. or 30 min. epoxy. Be sure to use it very sparingly because it's a heavy glue. Foam-safe CA glue can also be used but its quite expensive AND you need to spray on an accelerator otherwise it will take overnight to dry. Be aware that many solvents and paints will destroy this foam so be sure to use only water-based latex paints commonly found in craft stores.
